In Nige’s final few weeks and during the times we sat together, we cried a lot but we also laughed a lot. He had a wickedly dry sense of humour all the years I was lucky enough to know Nige and that lasted right until the end.
We were sat one day and he said that I should climb Everest in his memory, I hate to disappoint people ….. but, climbing Everest isn’t going to happen! But, Everest is approximately 29,000 feet high so it got me wondering what I could do thats the equivalent. In cycling circles, Everesting in when you repeatedly climb up the same hill until you’ve totalled the equivalent height of Everest. Whilst this is feasible, its not really all that catchy and probably quite boring. Now, cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End is approximately 900 miles with a total amount of climbing of around 35,000 feet so thats what I’m going to be doing.
I’m going to be taking on this challenge starting on Friday 19 May and intend for it to take 9 days finishing on Saturday 27 May. I know Nige will be looking down on me laughing his t*ts off seeing me in Lycra again - well Nige, its for you! There will be more updates about how I’m going to do this with details of the route and the logistics around it all.
I will be using this website & blog to keep you updated with my progress during training but using it to help me write my thoughts about losing Nige which is something I’ve struggled to do.
So many of you have sponsored me on cycling events over the last few years and I’m so grateful for every penny you’ve given. So unless I cycle around the world, this challenge is going to be biggest thing I’ve ever done so want to raise as much as possible for Bowel Cancer UK to help them in their research and the fabulous work they do in helping those affecting by this most horrible disease. A JustGiving page will be set up in due course.
Thanks for reading.
