A lot of my family & friends will have heard about Crookstone Barn and Crookstone Adventure Trust before. If not, well, Crookstone Barn is a converted barn way up on the edge of Kinder Scout in the Peak District near Hope/Edale and its run completely by volunteers, of which I’m one!
If you haven’t heard of it… check it out here - http://www.crookstoneadventuretrust.org.uk
Crookstone has been running an as ‘outward bound’ centre since the 1970’s and has had a few
make overs in its time. The team of volunteers work tirelessly to keep it up and over the last couple of years the barn has been completely rewired and re-plumbed and even had a new boiler. It runs of a diesel generator and gas bottles for cooking and can support 25 people with its fully equipped kitchen. The barn & trust is so incredibly lucky to have support from regular full-price paying visitors which help support those less well off by keeping the barn open.
Over the years Crookstone Adventure Trust have provided the barn free of charge to charity groups and under privileged school groups and have even helped groups by covering the cost of sleeping bags and providing funding for the food for them. The trust has even given free weekends at the barn to other charities to auction off to help raise their own funds.
The barn see’s people from all walks of life forms school groups, scouts and cadets to groups of children from Chernobyl and also groups from local homeless & rehabilitation charities. As a charity in its own right, Crookstone Adventure Trust makes the unique environment of the Peak District available to people at a minimal cost.
I personally have been a visitor of Crookstone Barn since 1993 as an Air Cadet and in more recent years I have become a volunteer trustee helping keep this amazing place open.
Such is the passion of charity work of the Crookstone Adventure Trust. The trust has so very kindly offered to fund the cost of the tyres & innertubes for my end to end ride to enable me to complete the ride and raise as much as possible for Bowel Cancer UK. I can’t think the [other] trustees enough for this very generous support!
